The acclaimed writer-producer did not foresee that Pluribus would turn into a breakout success. “God bless the fans,” he remarks. “It was unexpected the show being as talked about as it is, and it makes me overjoyed.”
As the debut season of the popular program reaching its finale—and a second season greenlit and underway—Gilligan and his team recently discussed the fan response and whether it will shape the storyline of Pluribus.
Anyone might to get sidetracked by the widespread acclaim and audience predictions regarding Pluribus. The creator is doing his best to avoid both.
“The experience is akin to constantly eating hot fudge sundaes and being laughing uncontrollably,” he explains. “It's wonderful, but I get wind of it from others, and that's intentional. Never in my life searched for my own name online, nor do I ever want to. It's quite the opposite. It's a bottomless pit I know I would get lost in and then I'd be pooping in a five gallon bucket from Home Depot and I'd rarely emerge from my living room.”
In spite of his concerted efforts, there’s it's impossible to ignore the overwhelmingly positive response to the series. The best he and his team can do is to acknowledge it humbly and try not to let it alter the course of the show.
“We make no attempt to tailor anything,” says writer and executive producer Alison Tatlock. “The narrative we craft is not influenced by audience chatter.”
“It's wiser to keep our noses to the grindstone,” Gilligan adds.
Considering Gilligan and his team aren't taking cues by public opinion, does it imply they have mapped out how Pluribus will reach its endpoint? The answer is yes… in a way.
“There are some interesting ideas about the ultimate destination,” Gilligan reveals. “yet we stand ready to abandon a decent plan for a better idea. That philosophy has guided us in excellent shape on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We change course when we conceive of something superior and I imagine we will be doing that.”
Alternatively, if they hit a wall, director and writer Gordon Smith has a pretty funny idea to use as a backup.
“I constantly suggest that everything takes place within a snow globe, and that we'll zoom out in the finale and that's where they've been all along,” he says humorously, “but no one is buying it.”
Then again, why mess with the legendary finales?
“I want Carol to wake up in bed next to Bob Newhart,” Gilligan adds, smiling.
