An high-speed car that was evading police slammed into a busy nightspot early on the weekend, claiming the lives of four individuals and wounding 11 in a historic district of Florida, renowned for its nightlife and tourists.
An air surveillance unit with the local police department observed the car driving recklessly on a freeway at about just after midnight after authorities stated the silver sedan had been observed street racing in a different neighborhood, according to a law enforcement statement.
The Florida highway patrol caught up with the vehicle and tried to execute a tactic that involves striking a back fender of a fleeing vehicle to cause it to lose control, called a precision immobilization technique, but it was unsuccessful.
State police personnel “ended pursuit” as the vehicle sped toward the historic Ybor City area near downtown, Tampa police said. Ultimately, the motorist failed to maintain control of the car and hit over a dozen people near the bar, officials confirmed.
Three victims perished at the scene and a fourth victim succumbed at a hospital. By Saturday morning, a fifth victim was hospitalized in critical condition, and eight other patients were being treated at local hospitals but were classified as stable, authorities stated. Two additional individuals sustained minor injuries and declined treatment at the scene. All 15 people are grown individuals.
“What happened this morning was a senseless disaster, we are with the loved ones of the victims and all those who were affected,” the Tampa top law enforcement officer expressed in a statement.
Authorities named the alleged driver as 22-year Silas Sampson, who was arrested on the weekend and is being held at the Hillsborough county jail.
Legal records showed the suspect has been accused with four charges of vehicular homicide and four counts of aggravated evading arrest with severe harm or fatality. Each are serious felonies. No attorney was listed for the accused.
“Our entire city is mourning the tragedy,” said Tampa’s mayor, who also served as Tampa’s initial woman police chief, in a post on social media.
“Our condolences are with everyone affected. The investigation into this crash is ongoing, and efforts are underway to obtain answers,” she wrote.
In recent years, certain regions and municipal authorities have advocated to limit the use of high-speed car chases to protect both civilians and officers. After a increase in fatalities, a recent study supported by the federal authorities recommended law enforcement pursuits to be minimized, noting that the danger to individuals, personnel and bystanders often outweighs the urgent requirement to apprehend a suspect.
Still, the state has intensified efforts on the tactics, with the region’s road police revising its policies to loosen limitations on the application of vehicle pursuits and precision techniques. The federally supported analysis characterized these tactics as “dangerous” and “debated”.
