We are checking video footage and photographs posted earlier today that depict the scene of a alleged car bomb explosion that Russian officials say killed a senior military officer in Moscow.
Russian authorities stated that Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov was in the car that exploded and that he succumbed to his wounds. An investigation is currently ongoing.
The initial step to verify the location from which the images originated relied on posts indicating the explosion happened on Yasenevaya Street in the southern district of the capital city of Russia.
Our analysis employed street-view imagery on digital map platforms and the local mapping service Yandex to match the unique yellow colour of a nearby apartment building seen in the footage.
Locating additional buildings, streetlights and the street layout verified where the pictures were taken.
We also checked that the videos were new and that the visuals had not undergone digital alteration.
