The beloved crime series Line of Duty will make a comeback for its 7th installment, announced by the broadcaster.

An upcoming six-episode season created by the show's creator will begin filming in Northern Ireland in the coming months, as confirmed by the production team.

The actress expressed excitement about the return, saying she was "so excited" about the series' return. Her co-star remarked, "What a joy it is to know that the main trio will be reuniting together next year."

The last series wrapped up in recent years with a finale that drew in over 17 million audience members. Speculation about a new season have been widespread ever since, but confirmation only arrived recently.

New Challenges for AC-12

Series seven begins with AC-12 no longer existing and rebranded as the new police oversight body, according to the announcement.

Martin Compston's character, Vicky McClure's role, and Ted Hastings continue tasked to tackle misconduct within the police force.

Their work "has never been more difficult", and in this climate, these officers are assigned their "most sensitive case to date."

Fresh Face and Complex Case

An additional officer, Det Insp Dominic Gough, described as a charming officer known for busts of criminal networks, is accused of misusing his authority to become a offender.

Yet, this investigation could be a deliberate distraction from a bigger threat still operating in the shadows, plot details suggested.

In a statement, the creator said: "Everyone involved feels enormous gratitude to the dedicated viewers."

"We're privileged to have had countless fans track the ups and downs of the unit over multiple series and we couldn't be more delighted to be returning for a seventh season."

He added: "Corruption in this country was thought to be over while Line of Duty was not airing, so I've been forced to use my creativity."

Cast Reactions

Martin Compston described being part of the police drama as "a job of a lifetime".

"Beyond the program's popularity but the colleagues I've collaborated with I now call some of my closest friends."

"I can't wait to pull the waistcoat on again and reunite with everyone," he said.

The Nottingham-born actress stated: "Obviously I'm so excited Line of Duty is returning! Eager to work with the creator, Martin and Adrian again. The city, we'll be there shortly!"

The veteran actor commented: "While anticipating the unit return, how exciting it is to know that the central trio will be working together next year."

"Delighted with the news and anticipating those mercurial plot developments."

Series Legacy

Line of Duty premiered in 2012 and became a highly successful TV dramas of the last decade, attracting guest stars such as Thandiwe Newton.

The BBC has not yet announced when the new season will premiere.

The conclusion of series six drew the long-running storyline about the search for criminal mastermind known as "the mysterious H" to a close, and producers said at the moment there were no plans for additional seasons.

Nevertheless, the network confirmed on this week that a seventh series is now in development.
