Out of all the mature animated films I have personally viewed, nothing has stuck with me as much as the dread-soaked finale of a viscerally violent and deeply subversive 2022 movie Unicorn Wars.
In the year 2015, this Spanish filmmaker developed a dark, somber , often savage universe with several minor , desolate twinges of hope.
While The Unicorn Wars seems like it stemmed from an impulse to advance animation further, the director explained that it was rather a try to express a universal, cross-cultural message about “the common origin of each battle.”
This theme is conveyed through a squad of brightly hued teddy bears , clearly modeled after a well-known series of cuddly characters.
Growing up in a society built around aggression as well as the military-industrial complex, many of these animals are obsessed with killing unicorns, thanks to a holy book that claims them they used to be masters of the woods, until the unicorns forced them out.
A few haven’t fully bought into the propaganda, , choose to try out substances and engage sexually in the woods.
Unlike their gentle counterparts, these colorful critters have visible genitals , obvious urges.
For a particular notably brutal, cynical bear, the bear named Bluey, the battle against unicorns turns into a road toward dominance — and particularly to authority above his softer, more compassionate sibling the character Tubby.
This bear behaves aggressively , a seeming antisocial figure , and when fear overcomes his unit and kills his teammates sequentially, he takes progressively influence on his own behalf, through ever more gory, harmful methods.
Meanwhile, the unicorns are suffering their own terror, as a growing, harmful creature in their woods.
“Initially, it seems like a lighthearted film,” the director commented. “But then it turns into a more serious and sad film. And ultimately, it transforms into a scary feature.”
Unicorn Wars starts out resembling among the whimsical movies from a legendary animator, that discover a mischievous joy in allowing animated figures swear, shoot each other, or sex each other up.
Then it becomes something more like a darker movie from that artist, with increasingly graphic violence and a tangible connection to the actual horror of war.
In the finale, it’s an outright Grand Guignol bloodbath.
The fear which makes this a perfect Halloween movie starts a lot earlier than one might expect.
The Unicorn Wars is ideal for the devoted lovers of violence, for lovers of intense movies who wish to see something they haven’t ever watched previously, and are able to withstand a plot that pulls absolutely no punches.
See it with the lights off without any distractions, and the conclusion will dig under your skin and linger.
