LeBron James's Record-Setting Scoring Streak Concludes, Yet Lakers Claim Win Over Toronto.

James understood his historic run of putting up 10+ points was threatened. When it mattered most, though, it was not his focus.

The correct basketball play meant distributing the ball – so he did. Consequently, the unprecedented record finished.

James's astounding run of 1,297 consecutive NBA regular season games with 10+ points was snapped on Thursday night, when basketball's greatest scorer was limited to eight total points during the Lakers' 123-120 victory over Toronto. He made the clutch helper, feeding Rui Hachimura for a three-point shot at the buzzer.

“Nothing,” James replied after being questioned on the record concluding. “We won.”

A Selfless Choice Secures the Win

James could have sought to clinch the game – and extended the streak – in the closing seconds, yet he opted to make the extra pass to Hachimura in the left corner. Hachimura sank it, with LeBron celebrated with his hands in the air.

You have to play basketball correctly. Always make the smart play,” James explained. That is how I operate. That is the way I was taught to play. I've played that way my whole career.”

James is very conscious of how many points he's scored at all times,” said the team's head coach the coach. “He did it just as he has so many times.”

The Run's Final Moments

He returned to the floor one last time with 5:23 remaining, the win along with the historic run on the line. He had six points on a 3-for-15 performance by that point.

He scored at 1:46 left to tie the game and missed a shot with 1:01 left which could have pushed him into double figures.

He didn’t take a subsequent shot – but could have. A teammate passed him the ball in the waning seconds, but James opted to dish it off instead.

The spirits of the game, when you play it the proper way, they often reward you,” Redick added.

The History of a Staggering Record

This incredible run started on Jan. 6, 2007. It was easily the greatest such streak the league has ever seen: Michael Jordan previously held a streak of 866 consecutive double-digit scoring games, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar recorded 787 such games, and Karl Malone recorded at 575.

LeBron is such a team-oriented player,” remarked Lakers center Jake LaRavia.

He focuses on playing the game of basketball. The chance was there but due to the player he is and his character as a person, he made the unselfish play, found Rui and claimed the victory.”

Reaching double digits was usually a guarantee early in the start of fourth quarters. During James’s streak, he had reached double figures by the beginning of the final quarter on the vast majority of occasions prior to Thursday.

But two such single-digit games through three quarters had occurred in the last week: He had nine points going into the fourth versus the Mavericks last week, then had six points before the fourth quarter versus the Suns earlier in the week.

James managed to extend the streak in the Phoenix game. The very next outing, it concluded – but he still rejoiced regardless.

“I always just make the right play. That is instinctive, no matter what,” James declared. “You make the smart play, the basketball gods consistently rewarding me.”
