Jets Head Coach Aaron Glenn Confident Kris Boyd Will Make a Full Recovery After New York City Incident

Jets head coach Aaron Glenn mentioned that he recently spoke with defensive back Kris Boyd and believes the player will recover well after suffering a gunshot wound in central New York early Sunday morning.

Glenn noted that Boyd, who is hospitalized, was “upbeat” during their latest talk.

“That gives me comfort, is that he’s in good spirits,” Glenn commented. “His wife and his kid, they are doing well and he will walk away from this just fine.”

The coach did not know when Boyd would leave the hospital, where he has been listed as serious yet stable.

“Don’t know just yet,” Glenn remarked. “Yet I must mention, from our conversation, he felt really upbeat. Once more, that reassures me, because of his outlook and he expresses himself so positively.”

Authorities shared video stills earlier this week of a man sought in the attack on the player. A motive for the shooting remains under investigation and authorities said it is unknown if Boyd was targeted. No one else was hurt as confirmed by officials.

The incident occurred just after 2am on Sunday about halfway between the famous arena and Times Square. Boyd, 29, was transported to Bellevue Hospital after sustaining an abdominal gunshot wound, as reported. The perpetrator got away.

Glenn mentioned Boyd has occupied his thinking “a great deal” since the news broke. The coach said that Boyd and his wife just had a child.

“My initial concern, he just had a kid,” Glenn remarked. “And I’m thinking about his wife, considering his child and I hope he recovers fully. That was my main concern.
“A certain process is underway, that I won’t detail, but I am pleased that he’s going to come out of this thing really, really well.”

Boyd hasn’t played this season, his first with the Jets, after being placed on injured reserve on August 18 with a shoulder injury that required surgery.

He signed with New York as an unrestricted free agent in spring and was projected as a key part of the team’s updated special teams under Glenn and ST coordinator Chris Banjo. However, he got hurt during preseason drills on 2 August and was carted from the field.

Boyd continued to be present during the entire campaign while working his way back.

“He remains involved with our activities,” Glenn stated. “I mean, he is a regular at our matches. He is completely involved. Given his status as a special teams standout, he’s done a really good job of helping the other guys we have.”

Boyd, a Texas native, began his career with Minnesota after getting drafted in the seventh round by Minnesota out of UT in the 2019 draft. He joined Arizona in last year and then joined Houston’s practice squad later that season. Boyd agreed to a one-year deal for $1.6 million with New York in the spring.
