Gavin Newsom States He Is Evaluating a 2028 Presidential Run

Gavin Newsom, a well-known Democratic figure, has indicated that he intends to make a decision about whether to launch a presidential campaign in 2028 following the 2026 midterm elections conclude.

"Absolutely, I couldn't be truthful if I denied it," the governor commented when asked about giving serious thought to a White House bid after the 2026 midterms. "It wouldn't be the truth. And I can't do that."

Newsom's tenure as governor wraps up in early 2027, and he is ineligible for re-election. Yet, he cautioned that any determination is not imminent.

"It's up to destiny," he remarked.

Increased Visibility as a Administration Opponent

The California governor has emerged as a prominent opponent of the current federal leadership, leveraging his online platforms and advocating for a ballot measure that would increase Democratic House seats in as a counter to redistricting by Republicans. This action has invited attacks from political opponents.

Clash on Transportation

Donald Trump's transportation chief, Sean Duffy, claimed that the governor does not care about the state's residents in a weekend appearance on a major news network. The secretary disclosed plans to withhold taxpayer dollars from the state and threatened suspending the authority to provide trucking licenses.

"I plan to withdraw $160 million from the state," Duffy declared, following a recently reported tragic collision in the state involving an non-citizen commercial driver that caused three deaths and casualties.

The governor's team highlighted that the national authorities had approved the driver's employment repeatedly, which enabled him to obtain a CDL under national regulations.

The transportation secretary had previously stated he was blocking $40m from California for ignoring language proficiency rules for truck drivers.

Firm Rebuttal from the Governor's Office

"Ex-reality TV personality, now transportation chief, still doesn't understand national statutes," his administration said in a last month's statement addressing the funding warnings. "Meanwhile, unlike this clown, we focus on reality: The state's commercial driver's license holders had a death rate much lower than the national average. The state of Texas – the sole state with additional licensed drivers – has a rate substantially higher than the state. Facts don't lie. This administration is dishonest."

Public Opinion and Campaign Considerations

A this month's study found that a majority of the party and a significant portion of the electorate indicated that Newsom should run for president in 2028. In recent years, Newsom's favorability has grown to an typical level of about one-third from previous levels, while his negative ratings has fallen from an mean of more than 40% to current figures.

Some time ago, Newsom commented while on a trip several key regions that he had "no idea" about his future for the next presidential election.

He also referenced his past difficulties, including being found to have a learning disability at the young age of five.

"The notion that a person who got 960 on his SAT, who still struggles to read scripts, who was always in the back of the classroom – the idea that you would even throw that out is, by itself, remarkable," he commented. "Who the hell knows? I am eager to see who presents themselves in the next election and who rises to the occasion. And that remains the key point for the voters."
