Eric Adams Will Support Former Governor Andrew Cuomo in NYC Mayor's Election

NYC's current mayor Mayor Adams revealed his plan to support former Governor Cuomo in the forthcoming mayoral race, despite months of strained relations between the pair of Democrats.

An Unexpected Turnaround After Recent Criticism

Just last month, the mayor had lashed out at Cuomo, describing him as a “snake and a untruthful person” and accusing him of having “a career of marginalizing Black political contenders.” Yet, in a recent statement, Adams reversed course, stating he now intends to campaign alongside Cuomo in areas where he holds strong support.

“It's essential to really wake up the Black and brown communities that have been affected by urban displacement on how critical this election is,” the mayor commented.

The mayor further explained, “They have watched their rents increase due to neighborhood changes and they have been overlooked in those neighborhoods, and I’m going to go to those neighborhoods and speak one on one with community leaders and organizations and I will appear with the governor in those areas and get them involved.”

Election Landscape and Recent Events

The election battle has so far been dominated by the struggle between Cuomo and progressive candidate his main rival, whose increasing popularity has drawn interest internationally and symbolized hopes for a rejuvenated progressive wing of the Democrats.

In a latest candidate forum, both the democratic socialist and GOP candidate his conservative opponent declared they would refuse Adams’s endorsement if extended.

Months ago, the mayor had launched his re-election campaign as an independent after facing legal accusations which were later dismissed in exchange for Adams’s cooperation with federal immigration raids across the city.

During a separate media briefing on Thursday, Adams responded to reporters inquiring into the support announcement by saying, “I’ll be with Andrew this evening.”

This development came a day after the two politicians were spotted attending a game side-by-side at the New York Knicks’ season opener at the famous arena, which occurred immediately following a heated candidate debate.
