As Swimmers Fled Danger, Viral Image Depicts Beach Patrol Sprinting ‘Pedal to the Metal’ In the Direction of the Scene.

Alexandra Ching, a permanent resident of Bondi, views the renowned shoreline as her back yard. On that fateful weekend night, she, similar to other neighbors, noticed cracking sounds echoing around the suburb.

“Everyone did, but I thought it was too light and you couldn't spot any lights,” she explains. Exiting her home, she observed people “pouring up Bondi Road”. The faces she saw made it clear something was wrong.

Positioned on the road, speaking to a couple who had hurried up the hill soaked, she noticed someone moving up at her rear. It was a lifeguard, sprinting in the direction of Bondi without shoes from the neighbouring Tamarama beach – a distance of 1.5km – while transporting a life-saving kit.

“I heard someone say ‘excuse me’, and when I spun around I only caught a glimpse of this streak in blue,” Ching describes. “He was simply racing by. He was alone moving in the opposite way that everyone was trying to escape from, while holding that big kit and without footwear … He moved into something that undoubtedly every part of you would tell you to move in the other direction.

“Just no hesitation, but just totally pedal to the metal sprinting.”

A Powerful Moment of Bravery During Chaos

The photo Ching captured of the lifeguard, since identified as Jackson Doolan, rapidly circulated as among numerous moments of courage in the following of the violent incident.

Andy Reid, another lifeguard, explained that Doolan, referred to as “Jacko”, ran from Tamarama beach to assist the other members at Bondi, as well as to aid other rescuers, officers and paramedics treating numerous those hurt.
