Adult Swim's Premier Fresh Series of This Year Earns a Substantial Renewal for Two More Seasons.

Last October, the late-night programming block saw the return of its offbeat hit, Smiling Friends. Yet, shortly thereafter, the channel unveiled a fresh animated series with a distinctly unique feel. Haha, You Clowns was gentle and comforting, in the spirit of a animated take of a serene talk show. During a period often marked by bleakness, this show's wholesomeness found an audience and propelled it a breakout hit.

A Major Commitment

In mid-December, the network made a major announcement: Haha, You Clowns has been renewed for a further two seasons. This gives showrunner Joe Cappa significant creative freedom to expand upon the story of the Campbell family. The series focuses on three respectful teenage brothers whose primary trait is their strong bond for their widowed father, with Cappa portraying for all four central characters.

"My deepest thanks go to the fans of the show who welcomed the series and spread the word," stated Cappa. "I’m incredibly thrilled that I get to hang out at the Campbell household for seasons to come."

Executive Acclaim

In the same announcement praise from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who called the series as "profoundly sincere and uniquely eerie." He shouted out the fans who discovered the show and advocated for its distinctly quirky sensibility.

"All of you got behind this new show, rooted for it on social media, and expanded its audience week over week so we could approve not one, but two more seasons," commented Ouweleen. "As the show says: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"

A Comforting Counterpoint

Upon its debut, Haha, You Clowns was hailed as "a comforting antidote" to more cynical adult animated fare. Viewers found something unexpectedly cozy about observing this lovable family navigate their everyday routines.

In earlier interviews, creator Joe Cappa shared his desire to evolve comedy past its long-running layer of irony. He linked this trend to various cultural shifts.

“There's this level of irony that we can't get ourselves out of,” noted Cappa. “It's like we have to know we’re the cleverest viewer in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for 10 years, and we must laugh at something different now. It's time for comedy to grow.”

Future Seasons

Given this two-season order, with Haha, You Clowns guaranteed to return, Cappa has the opportunity to be part of that very evolution. If nothing else, the renewal ensures audiences a little more time to enjoy the warm glow of the unique Campbell clan.

The final episode of Season 1 of Haha, You Clowns is scheduled to air on December 21st. The entire series is currently streaming on HBO Max.
