A extensive rescue and recovery effort is presently under way in the Caribbean waters for two missing sailboats loaded with humanitarian supplies journeying from the Mexican coast to Havana.
Mexico has deployed navy personnel and search planes to find the Friendship and Tigger Moth, which were had on board no fewer than nine total crew members, per a official statement.
The boats had been expected to reach the Cuban capital on Tuesday or Wednesday, but there has been a complete lack of contact from them and zero verification of their arrival, authorities reported.
The island nation has relied heavily on aid convoys from Mexico over the past few weeks, as the nation grapples with repeated power outages across the country.
"The crews and captains are experienced sailors, and both vessels are outfitted with proper safety systems and emergency beacons," a representative for the convoy said.
The nine-person crew are citizens of France, Poland, the United States, and Cuba. Mexican authorities said it has been in touch with rescue coordination centers from each country along with their consular staff.
"We are working closely with the relevant authorities and are still optimistic in the capability of the sailors to reach Havana safely," the spokesperson added.
Just days before, the Cuban authorities widely celebrated and greeted with fanfare a different ship that had transported 14 tons of relief supplies to the island.
That vessel, called "a new Granma" after the yacht in which Fidel Castro returned to Cuba to begin the revolution in the 1950s, carried photovoltaic panels, pharmaceuticals, baby formula, cycles and provisions.
Charity groups and individuals have largely spearheaded initiatives to bring critical assistance to Cuba since January, coinciding with the time a fuel embargo on the Communist-run nation was initiated.
The United Nations have since raised alarms about ""critical" shortages of supplies, with more than 50,000 operations postponed in Cuba due to power shortages.
Political measures have intensified lately, with comments from various representatives highlighting the delicate situation regarding relations.
Responding to certain comments, a prominent official from Cuba insisted that "the political system of Cuba is not subject to discussion."
Indications suggest that preliminary steps of discussions had begun, although their present status remains unclear.
The naval forces stated it was pledged to using all of the resources at its disposal to find the boats and guarantee the safety of the people on board.
To date, there has been no official comment on the disappeared vessels by the Cuban government.
